Following a recent project at Air Liquide’s plant in Charleroi, Belgium, this article looks at the latest Advanced Process Control technology - Platform for Advanced Control and Estimation, and how it can be applied to improve controllability of the plant to enhance automation and operational excellence.
The unit that was selected for this APC project was the Cyclohexane (CX) distillation unit because it displays the typical process characteristics in which an APC value proposition can be applied.
The Platform for Advanced Process Control and Estimation by Yokogawa is a state-of-the-art multivariable model based control technology, jointly developed with Shell. A pilot project was carried out by Yokogawa and the Turkish Petroleum Refineries Corporation (Tupras) on a Vacuum Distillation column at the Izmit Refinery, in Turkey.
